Self Publishing a Book: Graphic Design, Illustration & Humor

Have you ever thought about self publishing a book? It can certainly be a daunting and time consuming task. In the fall of 2012 that is just what my sister-in-law Laurel Spurrell and I decided to do.

Here's our story:

After having her second child Laurel became a stay at home mom. A big adjustment as many of you may know. Although not having to pack everyone up and rush off to work each morning was nice, the lack of adult interaction was tough to take at times. Laurel began posting comical, quirky status updates on Facebook about her days at home with the kids. Some of these posts were literally, LOL funny.

Friends and family started saying things like, "you HAVE to write a book or something" and "Please write a blog!". I completely agreed! Laurel needed to write a book. Why not? We already had some of the necessary skills to get this done right within our family, after all my brother Dan, (Laurel's husband) and I work in our small, family owned printing company TPI Solutions Ink. So, after many months of reading these posts and seeing the comments I called Laurel and said, "Let's do this!"

The idea was to create a small book filled with Laurel's humorous anecdotes on parenting two young girls. Addy Fulmer, Graphic Designer at TPI Solutions Ink, was excited to work on the graphic design of the book. Then we found Sara Capello, a junior now at Framingham State University, to work with us on illustrating the book. And, I guess you could say, I have been acting as the project manager. I have been overseeing the entire project, editing the book and working with Addy & Sara on the content and overall look of the book.

Now, our book is ready to go, but we need the funds for printing and binding. That is why we have launched a #kickstarter campaign to do just that. To date we have raised 29% of the funds necessary and we have 25 days left in the campaign. We need your help to get us to 100%. In return for your support and donation we are offering some FANTASTIC REWARDS that will be delivered to you just in time for mother's day gift giving.

Please check out our Kickstarter Campaign and help us get this awesome book into print.
